I obtained a complimentary load of fir from a tree not too far away from us. I got a couple of great logs that I slabbed from this lot. I likewise got several much shorter pieces of fir. I cut them in half to make bowl blanks. I have actually woodturned two of them into nice sized bowls. In this video, I go through the process without very many edits. You see most of what I do to go from a short log to a finished bowl. The one difficulty I had was getting a great surface on the green fir. I ended up simply woodturning with a very sharp 40/40 bowl gouge and not attempting to sand the surface. I finished the piece with walnut oil and hope it dries to a nice usable bowl.

I can hear my wife now- “What are you going to do with all those logs!!!!” Thanks for the video!
Thank you! I like longer videos
holly mother of fir log. 200minutes of Frank. Thank you
I dont think i’ve ever been this early but good lord that wood is gorgeous
17:40 How about dropping the jig onto the block of wood instead of putting the block on top of the jig? The jig is light and easy to move until the screw lines up with the hole. Then you flip them both over as a unit.
I thought the same thing as I watched him wrestle the work piece🙂🙂.
Exactly what I’d do.
❤3 and a half hour long❤ it’s a dream comming true, dinner is almost ready and after that I have nothing else to do soooo, I’m watching this tonight, it’s almost time to close the curtains and light some candles. Thanks so much!
This is a pure delight. Watching this while getting some work done on a cozy Sunday morning. I love the pace of this.
Anyone else here shouted: “Just drive forward!” at his screen?
Yes!!!😂
This would be a perfect “second channel” video that I would love to put on as I fall asleep
Second channel would make sense
Nice to see a whole project from beginning to end. I’ll have to watch this in segments but definitely like it rather than only seeing the glamorous shots. Next best thing to seeing it live. Maybe a live wood turning or CNC is next???
The time breaks wlll allow me to have 4-5 days of Frank. Lovely.
Oh I needs it for my popcorn!
I’d love to see it in about a month. An admirer.
Obviously, you’ve done it before. Nicely done. Thank you for sharing. Wish you well.
Wow — quite the process! This video really helped me to appreciate the time and patience needed to produce beautiful objects. Thank you!! I love, love, love your videos regardless of the number of minutes!!!
Beautifully done
I’m sure that you know your physical limitations better than your viewers but it sure seems that you’re courting disaster walking down stairs while lugging a chunk of log!
No disrespect to you Frank, but you are one of my most favorite channels and I selfishly want you around for a long time!!
I wont say that this long of a video makes this the most perfect day of my life. But its looking like the most perfect day of my life…
As a wood turner who struggles to correct similar habits, I greatly fear for the condition of your back 🤕
Classic “lift with your back” technique.
Just sitting down to do some knitting and I see a new 3+ hour Frank video?!? Woohoo, afternoon is going to be great.
