Who doesn't require sharp knives? This sharpener is simple to utilize, however remarkably precise and produces an edge that's surgically sharp. And you can do it the simple way by 3D printing it, or the tough method from wood. I used stunning solid wood for mine, but any scrap wood will work.
Stay tuned for a device that turns this knife sharpener into an accuracy sculpt sharpener! Details on that will be on my Patreon quickly.
The printer I used for this task was the Bambu Laboratory P1P and the filament was standard PLA.

Who doesn’t need sharp knives? This sharpener is easy to use, but insanely accurate and produces an edge that’s surgically sharp. And you can do it the easy way by 3D printing it, or the hard way from wood. I used beautiful solid hardwood for mine, but any scrap wood will work.

The printer I used for this project was the Bambu Lab P1P and the filament was basic PLA.

  2. I added a 3D printer to my arsenal a couple years ago to build my PrintNC, and it was my hope that I would still gain utility from it after that build. And I did, that utility primarily being in quickly designing and printing jigs and other small tools for the shop. So it’s been a real thrill seeing what John Heisz does with one!

  3. Very cool, John! I’ve had a 3d printer for a long time and just started printing with ABS a couple weeks ago (had to buy an enclosure).

    Your videos are quite inspiring!

  4. This was great because of the side-by-side build comparisons. There was a lot of time invested in this, thank you John.
    Best Wishes, B.

    1. Thanks Brendan. Making the wooden one wasn’t bad because I already had all the details worked out for the 3D printed one. But the 3D printed one took nearly a full week to design, so definitely a lot of time in this one πŸ™‚

  5. Well done John! Sent this video to one of my friends who is a knife collector and likes them sharp! πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ”ͺπŸ”ͺ

  6. Cool stuff! I still do it “by hand” and my results are inconsistent, to say the least. I should try this type of sharpenner.

  7. It’s interesting to see the differences in design for manufacturability when moving a design from (presumably) injection molded to wood and 3d printing.

  8. Hi John how about something easy to sharping chisels, I have more trouble sharping my chisels I can never get my chisels to say sharp, thanks John

  9. Very well done. The one I made a while ago clamps the knives between a wood square block and a large washer. Have to admit it sometimes doesn’t hold a large knife in place during sharpening ( and more difficult to change sides) , this clamping system would solve that.
The only thing mine has over yours is that some things are glued with ’’ construction adhesive β€™β€™πŸ€£ . Good video John πŸ‘

  10. Great builds… as always. I’d love to see a post on how 3D printing has impacted you as a maker, and when you think about printing vs building with wood.

  11. Fantastic build, John! Really well done!!! πŸ˜ƒ
Stay safe there with your family! πŸ––πŸ˜Š

  12. Really love that you made it out of wood as well, it’s so cool to see both side by side

  13. If you’re going to use that much Super Glue, Accelerator is very most definitely your friend. Huge time saver.
