Hardwood from Kencraft:

I'm making a huge cassette tape to scale out of various species of wood, using nearly every tool in my store consisting of the CNC, laser cutter, vacuum press, and 3D printer. This woodworking job mixes veneer work, inlay, and multimedias into one massive wall piece with a direct connection to my childhood. It'll be a centerpiece in my upcoming art show this June. Follow along as I explore various techniques and disciplines, from CAD style and digital fabrication to hand-finishing and assembly.

  1. I can’t wait to see this in person at your art show June 20th in Toledo, Ohio!

  2. Holy cow! When you talked about this on the pod I thought it was gonna be regular size. This rips

  3. It’s this type of project that reminds me that not everything needs to have a function to be of value. This is a great lesson in woodworking techniques, including vacuum pressing, veneering, resawing, flush trimming, inlay, etc. Great job and thank you!

  4. Thank You! The days of cassettes, 8 tracks, and 45rpm records are what I grew up on. You did good and Thanks again.

  5. To quote Cake: “Sad Songs and Waltzes aren’t selling this year.” Cool project!

  6. Imagine if real cassette tapes were made this way. Well, I’m glad they weren’t because I wouldn’t have been able to afford them back in the day.
This cassette tape is really awesome. I love it. I’m glad you made it.

  7. Dude, this may be the coolest thing you’ve made on YT. Absolutely crushed it.

  8. I heard on your podcast a couple weeks ago that you mentioned some random said you were making ‘decor’ and not Art. (first off, F* them.) I think the reason someone might think that is that you set up your videos to make it appear that you have such a clear idea of what the finished product is and even though you have some hiccups along the way sometimes, the end product almost always is exactly what you were shooting for. And at least for me and most of the Artists I went to school with, we treated the Art-making process as a fluid experience. The final product often differed from the initial idea – in some cases quite drastically – due to material or skill limitations or anything else. I love that your work is so refined and clear. I hope that I get to come to the show in June, I’ll be driving through the area that weekend and would love to see you and your work in person.

  9. When you’re wrong, you’re wrong. That is an awesome thumbnail, David.

(I was a TDK SA90 man. I had so many)

  10. Okay. This is the first time I experienced a type of satisfaction I only get when I’m in the shop working on my own project. I love the amount of perfection and detail you though of when making this. 20/10.

  11. “Let The Bodies Hit The Floor” is just “It’s Raining Men” from a different perspective.

  12. probably not circumference.. but, perimeter? You’re welcome. And I cannot state enough how much love this project.
