After Gathering 500 Woodworking Books, Here's What I have actually Discovered. For 10% off your very first purchase, go to:
In this video, I take you inside my ever-growing collection of over 500 books– mainly woodworking, style, and craft-related– and share how they've shaped who I am as a maker and artist. I speak about the delight of searching for utilized books at thrift shops, antique shopping malls, and libraries, and how each book holds a story beyond its pages. From my favorite 1970s job books to rare art collections, I explore how physical books use motivation that the web simply can't match. I also share a bit about how I arrange my collection, assess the books that changed my innovative direction, and provide a peek at the process and philosophy behind gathering with intent.

Dave! I love you videos. I don’t do wood working but i do love books. Please don’t change a thing!
-For me, especially videos from the last few months, are hitting me right in the creative sweet spot. I watch with a smile on my face and inspiration in my heart. Thanks, David.
-The look on your face when your found your book in the library…come on, man.
New flow of the content is gold. Glad you are so energized!
That Goodwill bookstore is bonkers! And so are all the other used book places! One thing I love about Japan (aside from the usual things) is the sheer amount of books and bookstores everywhere, even massive stores dedicated to used books and magazines. They also have many cute little books that fit in your pocket, but sadly those are almost all in Japanese.
Your journey reminds me of The War of Art by Steven Pressfield. Loving your current art journey!
Excellent video David! Love your passion for books and learning. I read a lot of books each year so I know where you are coming from. Keep up the great work and making videos! You are indeed one of a kind! 👍👍
I love your bandsaw box book.❤
I’ve been loving your recent videos. You’ve always done an amazing job of creating videos with your own personal vibes to them, but the level of passion in your recent videos is palpable. You have inspired me to get back into all of my crafting after a bit of a dry spell. I’ve mostly been sewing recently, but creative inspiration isn’t restricted to one art medium
I love books too. I have a huge collection of books including many metaphysical books, sewing design, health, art. I read some of them 40 years ago and when I reread them, they are new to me!
I love the new videos you truly help my creativity thank you.
I love how passionate you are about creativity and you inspire me to get off my butt and make something even if nobody ever sees it.
I am a huge fan of the Audels guides. I have the Carpenters and Builders set from the 1923. They covered just about every industrial subject you can think of and I love them for learning about all things Oldy Timey.
I’ve read that wood turning book. Our library system has a yearly book sale.
I have that collection of Pop Mechanics DIY Encyclopedia. I feel the same way about my book collection! It’s on the bookshelves in the living room. D&D Books, novels, woodworking. ALL the books.
5:27 Last year I was on a road trip with my wife and we happened to see a Book Sale sign at a library. Inside I found they were selling a bunch of Sunset books for $1 each. I bought a dozen😊. They are really cool books and do really have that spark you talked about to generate ideas.
I am in my 7th decade of life and used to collect and hold on to dozens of books. Most of mine were on business and teaching/learning and education. I didn’t get my creative juices rolling until my 6th decade – late in life. I have had to downsize in my recent years as my life changes. My ability to keep all of my books or other important life items caused me to be conflicted, but the ability to use online tools to gather information contributed to my decision to get rid of many of my books. As you say, there is not the same feeling of searching the web to gather information as I had when looking through my books. But life does move on and choices are required. Enjoyed hearing your passion for books and I can fully understand it. You do such a good job of sharing your stories.
I’m here for this new direction of your videos!!! ❤
I’ve been following you for years and love the direction you are taking the channel! I’ve been in a creative block for some tine, and your content has inspired this new wave of creativity. So thank you.
I love reading and have a nice collection of older classic literature, which is something younger me would have NEVER enjoyed! I do have a few woodworking books, but have not read them yet. Perhaps I should. I have a big collection of DVD and Blue-ray movies, for which I’ve made a spreadsheet to keep inventory of. I never thought about an app existing for such a thing. I really enjoyed your video!
Your attitude toward books is the same as mine. Used books are my absolute favorite because of those untold stories of previous owners.
I’ve been acquiring books as well. My Grandfather gave me those very same Popular Mechanics set. They were his that he used a lot. Special to me for sure.
I’ve slowly added to the collection, and this is great inspiration and some great clues!
