Well … what's a comfy chair without a footrest? In this video I cover how I made one for the chair i just recently built that's quite special – it's equipment actuated and fits completely underneath the chair when folded in.
Like I stated in the video, the complexity of this was off the charts and the video would be a number of days long if I consisted of all of the information that needed to be worked out.
To offer you an idea of just how much time went into it, in general it took longer to design, develop and debug than the chair itself.
An obstacle undoubtedly.
The gears are 3D printed from PETG and they are holding up extremely well, but I want to make brand-new ones from wood (or aluminum!) in the future, now that I have the mechanism refined.
That's the charm of 3D printing when you can develop your own parts – it lets you quickly alter parts throughout the style/ construct process.

that’s the most badass chair to have ever existed
Always love watching your build videos! Soooo cool!
I just love watching John build. ANYTHING. He always incorporates clever things in making or the parts themselves. I click the like button before I press play.
That 3D printer has really opened up some master level skills. Maybe next you get a metal lathe and a milling machine 🙂
Yeah, John would be good at that, but he would always move towards lumber , like Mathias w. This was a very enjoyable project to watch.
I’ve been playing with gears and timing belts the last couple weeks… This sparks a few ideas to refine my design!!! I love the custom details the you were able to add to the gears, shafts and bushings to make them work for you. That’s the type of thing that was unattainable just a couple decades ago if you were in a home shop. Once again, awesome design John.
3D-printing templates… YES! A good example how 3D-printing and woodworking can go hand in hand.
For someone who is “slowing down” you are killin’ it. I was impressed with the chair but the footrest almost has the engineering of the space shuttle. Nice job on the chair John.
John I’ve been watching your videos for a few years, I’m totally amazed at the complexity of your builds. I’m a woodworker 71 year old, and I don’t have your computer skills. I tip my hat to you and am envious of your abilities.
Have been absent from the channel for a while (back when you weren’t having fun). Looks like that time has passed, happy for you!
I learned woodworking from you and others, so I could build my own recliner. Super cool to see you getting into this project. Hope you do many more videos on this topic as you dial in the design.
Nice build, John. Talk about reinventing the wheel, in this case – that was a good thing. Hope you get many hours of relaxation and enjoyment out of that chair.
Next level design and execution. Not forgetting of course the effort involved in recording and editing the build. Superb, the best bit about YouTube.
Speechless watching this series on your custom chair. I’ve learned so much from you and a few other maker channels. As I make more things, and fix more things. I remember tips from various videos and use them constantly. Thank you for everything and Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Creativity, ingenuity, engineering. Completely in awe of your abilities
The chair got even better. You’re putting that 3D printer to excellent use. Great work! 👏🏼
Considering the ‘Concept’, Design, Engineering and Manufacture, I think the chair is worth a million dollars. Thanks also for the tips on cleaning the spray can tip, and the plastic bag to ease the vinyl cover. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Yes that upholstery trick with the bag is champion as they say when saving the purpose built answer to a particular problem. Your sewing skills are really impressive for such good results so quickly. Like yesterday you picked up a sewing device and turned out some very nicely done pieces- that function ! Thrilling venture you’ve tapped into. So inspiring to me…wish I was younger and stronger so that I could learn these new skills of yours. So it goes. Keep up the ideas my Canadian brother of a different mother.
Absolutely in awe with this build . Normally I can wrap my head around your builds , but this is some next level stuff. Also in such a short time your printer knowledge is off the charts. I bow before the master. Well done John and happy holidays.
Thanks and merry Christmas 🙂
Truly an artsy happy seat cover. The whole enchilada. Wonderful design that looks easy to rest inside, like a cockpit of sorts. Awesome working out the necessary delineation of mechanisms. Damn I wish I could think and reason through snags like you do. I’m impressed with your 3 D printing process; you make every twist and turn seem easily worked through. The function of the raised foot rest is remarkable to behold and it looks like sitting in your chair is a reward like dream. Looking for reasons to use that fancy seat cover. It’s great to see you produce all the parts you need and I’m thankful you intend to incorporate wooden gear parts. Congratulations John. You rung the bell again!!!
Love it John! I’ve been watching your videos for ages but this one is next-level for me in terms of the end-to-end designing through to the end result. I also loved the trolling of the safety comments 🤭
My father always told me, anyone can be a carpenter, but a true “Artist” is able to hide their mistakes.
I really like how you show the “OOPS” moments and then fix them. Thank you.
