It’s much more fun and satisfying saying “I made it myself” than saying “I got it from IKEA.”
It’s getting to the point, where a beginner doing almost any skill has higher quality standards than most things you can buy
Insightful
This is true.
I’ve made a few things myself and want to make more. But even my amateur wood working is a lot more sturdy than anything you can get at Walmart and ikea.
I’ve learned that the people who say “it’s cheaper if you just bought one” also like to say “that’s to expensive, I’ll do it myself”
I used to make plastic products almost 15years but prices gone up with oil. No one can afford my work even know I can and have standing with customers that the products are still lasting into 12years outdoors! I gave people what they wanted!
I do love the customer fit drawer dividers. But let’s talk about the new cabinets…did you build those? They are gorgeous, and the color is 🔥!
A lot of the stuff bought is pretty much garbage. Years ago I bought a kitchen cart from walmart only to have the wood top warp & split within a few months. The metal bottom is ok but I had to replace the wood top with something I made that has lasted me about 14yrs now.
Sometimes you can get better cheaper doing it yourself. I bought a walnut face grain cutting board from a bougie cooking store for around $85 that warped soon after purchase. I made my own end grain board a few years back as a 1st try out of cherry, walnut, purple heart, & red heart for around $40. It is cheaper, looks better, far superior cutting experience, higher durability & I learned a lot.
This year I made most of my Christmas gifts. It cost me around $350 but I made 6 end grain cutting boards, 2 serving trays, a kitchen knife holder, 6 sets of chop sticks with a box to hold them, a small jewelry box & a chopping bowl for a mezzaluna knife that has been in the family for a long time. Bought that $350 would’ve covered 1.5 of the cutting boards & I was able to make things specific for each person. I spent all my spare time for about 3 weeks but I spent my time doing something I enjoy instead of fighting crowds or hoping something was delivered on time.
Now most of my family & some others that saw the gifts want to buy stuff from me. I don’t expect it to be steady but just from Christmas I will probably make around $2000 past materials in February. I even had to start turning people down because I’m not sure of the pace I can keep.
Steve Ramsey is how I “accidentally” got into woodworking many years ago 🤘🏼
If you build it yourself you can also make it stronger than the cardboard stuff at Walmart.
No. May daughter bought an Ikea bookcase. 80 bucks for a 30″ wide particle board stack. Quick, yes, but I can build bigger and better. More expensive than it used to be but still cheaper.
Actually you can buy great customizable drawer organizers at IKEA.😊👍
He is the reason why I do woodworking now. He’s the first one on YouTube that I subscribed to.
God has Blessed me because of Steve.
It’s bespoke, artisan-crafted furniture tailor-made to my liking.
The quality of doing it yourself is superior than the cheaply made garbage you get at Walmart. In the long run its cheaper to build things yourself as they usually last a lifetime if not longer
The quality of the materials and method would never be the same. The satisfaction of doing this yourself is priceless. Ignore bizarre comments.
It’s not just that you can customize your work, you also know how to alter it, or fix it if it ever breaks. Through the process of building you get to know the materials and methods.
I got into woodworking so I can customize it. I want to build a massive built in shelf and started small on things I needed that store bought stuff wouldn’t fit.
What I like about building furniture myself is how perfectly fitting vou can make them. I have two bookshelfs which fit my books with a millimeter to spare, and it’s amazing – you can’t buy something like this
When you make it yourself. You will always get the finished product you want. That’s one of the key items.
