Woodturning – Searching for Root Balls !!

In this wood turning video, I have a scout about on my bike to ideally search out some root balls. Dead fall trees are normally where I source the majority of the wood I turn and these 2 pieces I discovered while biking will be stored for a year or two to dry. The piece I kip down this video is from a Sycamore tree and turned pretty good thinking about how gnarly it was, as usual the sanding was a great deal of work and probably took longer than the turning did!! I finished it with Danish oil.

  6. Just wondering if it necessary to allow some drying time for the wood to stabilize before turning

  7. Oh what fun. Looked as if you enjoyed the hunt almost as much as the turning. Looking at the sort of pieces you’re producing I find myself wondering how often a chunk like this actually defeats you – too fragile, unexpected areas of rot, intrusions like nails, or simply too boring.

    1. I had one a few videos back where there was too much rot .. But luckily I don’t have that many 👍
