I have actually had this Horse Chestnut Burl for a number of years but I have actually hesitated to turn it, as I didn't wish to squander any of it. I likewise could not bring myself to cut it up, so I chose to buy a coring system. After getting feedback from other turner's, I got the Oneway coring system and a couple of knives. Most likely not the easiest piece for your very first effort at coring, however it went well, and I think this was the best method to show off this sensational burl. I wouldn't recommend utilizing a glue block for a tenon on something like this however the burl inclusions on the base made it impossible to turn a good tenon without losing a few of it's finest character. I completed the bowls with Danish oil.

Glad you liked it!
As the saying goes: ‘Sometimes, less is more’. Nice.
I love a good burl. They make some of the best wood projects I’ve ever seen. And I’m a big fan of the cores, I know Jim Sprague uses the oneway a lot, and it is amazing to see the bowls he can get out– it would all be shavings if it weren’t for the corer. So yay new adventures!
probably the coolest burl I’ve turned
@AndyPhillipWoodturning Love a good notty burl.
Outstanding! As always your artistic eye is impeccable! Absolutely gorgeous!
Thankyou
beautiful as always. got to say, watching you has taught me to turn some really nice pieces myself. think one of the best things i learned was looking at the wood and let it tell you what it should look like.
Thanks.. That’s great to hear ๐
Once again, unbelievable beauty. The coring system looks like it has potential.

Beautiful burl-bowls ๐
I love burl as you already know. And saying that I’m very happy to see you core it instead of just putting chips on the floor Andy!!!
They all come out very beautiful and you did an excellent job turning them!!!!
I enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
These are a lovely set of bowls. The burl has such character.
Just looked at them on your website and if I had the money I’d own these for sure!!!! But being on SS and disabled I’ll sadly never own something like these. I think the smallest one is the most beautiful of them
Excelente trabajo! Gracias por compartirlo! Un abrazo!

STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL!
That circle jig is pretty awesome. ๐
I love this solution. It always seems to be such a shame when you see how much of the gorgeous wood ends up as shavings. These are beautiful!
