Diving into the unanticipated journey of producing a mean an art piece that indicates a lot to me. Initially, the art piece and stand was supposed to be one cohesive system and one video, but because the stand is so cool and requires many disciplines along with an unfortunate occurrence, it got its own video. Made from laminated walnut with hickory accents, this piece has ended up being a testament to the balance between creativity and the pressure of due dates. I share my thoughts on how deadlines, far from stifling imagination, in fact sustain it– pushing me to turn ideas into reality instead of letting them linger in the "what if" zone.

  1. I totally get that you gotta do what makes you happy and I understand the change in style of your videos recently. I really miss the comedy from you old video style though. It’s what set you apart from all the other woodworking YouTubers on here

    1. Was just going to say the same thing. Im glad drill some holes and pound some pegs was incorporated. New videos are good, but I also come to see the finger condom and glue shots

  2. I have noticed over the past couple of months the passion and excitement is back in your videos, which gives me energy to go out in the shop, to make something, tbe stay passionate, and to be safe. Thank you David.

  3. “Nobody’s expecting an album” I’m sorry? So I’m just nobody to you? You can’t tease greatness like drill some holes and pound some pegs and then say NOBODY expects an album.

  4. Anticipation is building. I knew you liked music, but did not know you have been working for so long to create an album. And your own music in your videos. Really cool. Have your wife give you a deadline for the album, that’ll get you going to get it done. lol. Can’t wait for the next one showing the art piece, and I hope you talk about the sponsor. Your videos are getting better, and it shows with the new narrative you are using.

  5. Deadlines do make a difference.

The trick is learning to set them for yourself, or just work on the farmer method.

  6. This is going to look awesome! So happy to see “Sand in the place…” make a comeback! 😊

  7. You know, I usually groan when a video concept gets split for sponsorship reasons, but I appreciate your transparency. And it does look like this stand is gonna be worthy of a video all on its own. Looking forward to seeing it installed with the art.

  8. David, I’m really glad to hear some new music bits in this one. Maybe it’s not a deadline, but I’m looking forward to your next cuts.

  9. Your outlook on being creative is absolutely true. You can, of course, have a bit natural aptitude in specific areas. A knack. But that knack is no substitute for the time and practice.

Love the channel and your work is killer.

  10. I really like the new direction you’ve taken your videos. They’re still great woodworking, but they’re also more personal. I like the self help/motivation angle a lot.

  11. I have been watching your content for many years, back to the Drunken Woodworker. I have commented on some and, to my excitement, you have responded. You’re outside the box creativity has inspired me to create and make my own projects and enjoy woodworking. I kinda drifted away from your channel when you began the “buying cheap tools” video’s. I, for one, am really glad to see you back in the shop doing your channel name, Make Something.

  12. You’re 100% right. The more you think about something, the more you’re intimidated to just get going. Thanks for the push!

  13. I love that you don’t just run straight to the CNC when you have something tough . you just jump in and do it the way most of us would have to.

  14. I’ve been missing the “sand in the place where you live” joke. I understand not wanting to overuse it, but it was fun to see it again.

  15. When I was younger I was really good at drawing and hand carving pieces. I stopped in my late twenties and pursued other things. Now, in my sixties, I’m getting back into creating. Times have changed and, while I still have all of my chisels, I’m pursuing a more CNC centric approach. While it’s slowly coming back (somewhat) I doubt I will ever be as good as I was. Long winded way of saying never stop creating. Keep up the videos

  16. A 1990’s band I like always put their manager on the credits as if he were part of the band. In an interview, the manager said, “I love putting them on a tight deadline, because I know they’re gonna come up with their best.”

Exactly the thing you’re talking about.
