Hardwood from Kencraft:

wasn't simply a filmmaker– he was a carver, painter, photographer, musician, and . But more notably, he lived by a viewpoint he called The Life– a way of creating that prioritizes intuition, secret, and providing ideas the space they need to grow. In this video, I pay tribute to Lynch by making a piece inspired by his viewpoint. Along the way, I review how his ideas rewired my method to imagination, shifting my focus away from algorithms and expectations and back to making for the sake of making. Whether you're an artist, a maker, or just somebody trying to find inspiration, The Life has something to offer. Let's explore what it implies to trust the procedure, follow concepts where they lead, and develop without worry.

  1. This video strikes me, especially your line, “If you have dreams, now is a good place to start”.

Tearing up a bit on this one.

  2. David, this is one of the most beautiful and inspiring videos I have seen on Youtube. I am SO happy that you’ve had the courage to follow your own creative journey and not just following the algorithm. I too am a massive David Lynch fan – ever since I saw Eraserhead when I was just 18 years old. I didn’t understand it – still don’t really. But I remember thinking at the time about the man who created it and him having the courage to put out a piece of art that, perhaps, only he really understood and not necessarily worrying about pleasing people. That is the place I would like to get to and hopefully, soon, have the courage to share my work on this platform. Thank you for this video – so inspiring and motivating. ❤

  3. I’m 50 years old and teared up more than once watching this, overwhelmed by your joy, enthusiasm, passion, and respect for your favorite artist and the art he inspired you to make. This is officially my new favorite video of yours. Keep living the art life.

  4. I was super lucky to have had the opportunity to work with Mr. Lynch on the entirety of his film Lost Highway. He was a very pleasant man to be around. As he sat in his Director’s chair one day on set I asked him for some clarity on the mind boggling script, was this film meant to be allegorical? He smiled and said, ” I don’t know”.

    1. I’ve often thought that Lynch is like the Ancient Greek poets: the Muse descends and not even he completely understands what the art he produces actually means…

  5. I absolutely love your tribute to David Lynch. I didn’t know much of anything about him, but now you have opened the door to explore his writings and art more. So intriguing! His philosophy resonates deeply with me. Thanks man, you’re the best. ❤

  6. Man David, I was looking forward to this one from listening to the podcast. But wow I didn’t expect this. This is such a great tribute and inspirational video. You’ve outdone yourself yet again and introduced me to David Lynch. Keep moving!

  7. David. Wow.
Thanks so much for what you’re doing on YouTube.
Your life, outlook and art are an inspiration.

  8. I just found your channel yesterday, and ended up watching until way past bedtime.

David Lynch was like a lightning rod for me. I’m 47, and caught Twin Peaks after it’s initial run. I’ll never forget that feeling of joy when I realized that the show existed. This anomaly, a thing that was both amorphous and razor sharp- it felt almost bespoke in its style and vibe and strangeness. But that was the first jolt on that lightning rod.

I won’t write an essay here, but there have been many more, visiting and revisiting his film work, but then also through the documentaries and books you’ve mentioned in your video. He generously shared his relationship with creativity, which in turn helped me understand my relationship with my creativity. What a beautiful gift to give.

Anyways, I just felt like I had to acknowledge the coincidence- the algorithm led me to this channel, and the next day you share a video about one of my all time favorite humans.

Cheers, and thank you for this one. (I’m still catching up with your previous videos, so I may as well thank you in advance for those as well)

  9. David, I have not watched any of your videos in a while, because I got tired of seeing ‘I bought every WEN/every Facebook ad/etc’ content, but your expressed desire not to chase the algorithm + the production quality of this video has me back. I could watch these all day.

  10. DL was off-center, provocative, so enjoyable. Thanks for enlightening his talents beyond cinema. Your take enlightens us to DL’s broad creativity & adds to his earthly eulogy. Bravo. Bravo. Bravo.

  11. I cried twice, first when you cried, and later when you said “if you have dreams, now is a good time to start” thank you for showing your vulnerability David, you don’t know how refreshing it is to see someone be so vulnerable and passionate on YouTube, the love and appreciation you feel and share is important. Keep up the great works, yes, “works” plural.

  12. Thank you! I’ve been trying to find my way back to being creative and I’ve been struggling with the direction. I have stressed myself out not realizing it was killing the creativity. Thank you for pointing out that the directions doesn’t matter it is the creative journey and where it takes you.

  13. Love you and David Lynch. I’ve been following Make Something for years, and have really enjoyed your turn to making more what you are passionate about and less following numbers. I’ve loved Lynch’s work ever since I saw Eraserhead way back when. Watching Twin Peaks with my son was a bonding experience for us. RIP David Lynch.

  14. I’m a college instructor and advisor for our campus film studies group. Our student president picked Eraserhead for last week’s film and the reaction those students had to Lynch’s visual and aural masterpiece was mimicked in your emotional journey building this piece. Fantastic work.

  15. I started watching your videos years ago to find ideas for Christmas gifts and watched your philosophy shift and develop into something much deeper than just “woodworking videos”. Ive never read any of his books and i know nothing about him but seeing the change he has brought to your life just through your videos is clear evidence that he was a good man. You have become in a way to me what he was to you, and i aspire to be creative at any opportunity that i get. You’ve made making art more personal for me, and I deeply appreciate it. Thank you for spreading his philosophy, he would be proud and grateful

  16. Loving this channel more & more. What an inspirational insight into Lynch’s approach to work, life & creativity.

  17. Beautiful tribute to the GOAT, David Lynch.

I just turned 50, I create music, films, and photography, and I started woodworking about eight years ago as a form of therapy to help me cope with things. Make Something was my first introduction to the woodworking world, and it truly inspired me.

    Thanks for this video, Dave!

  18. This was a great tribute to a man that inspired you.
Thanks for sharing what he meant to you and his effect on your creative process.
You, yourself have inspired many people through your YouTube channel. You’ve been a tremendous inspiration to me and I want to thank you for that.

  19. Sometimes the algorithm stars align and show you the exact video you need to see. I thought I was subscribed to every maker channel on Youtube, but somehow this is the first video of yours I’ve seen, and boy it’s a doozy. I’m a professional musician, amateur woodworker and maker, and I’ve been practicing Transcendental Meditation for almost 10 years. Since David Lynch’s passing, I’ve seen this outpouring of love from so many people that were inspired by him. For whatever reason, I actually didn’t know a lot about him or his philosophy of The Art Life, but this video has inspired me to delve into David Lynch’s life head first. You made a beautiful video. As someone that’s been struggling with life as an artist and the negative voices in my head, thank you for creating exactly what I needed to see at this point in my life.🙏
