I saved this STUNNING piece of wood from the fire pit!

This project started with an easy piece of wood picked up on the side of the roadway and transformed into a special hanging . Along the way, I found it was hickory and paired it with a spectacular piece of Buckeye burl. Initially planned as a floor-standing piece, it evolved into a wall-hanging design with contrasting matte and high-gloss finishes. This piece was everything about letting the process lead the way and embracing unanticipated minutes of inspiration. It's a vibrant, sculptural project that presses the limits of traditional style.

  1. Morning. In nearly 5 decades of woodworking, I have given away nearly everything I ever made, except for the furniture/cabinetry in my home. But, I saved my favorite piece. It’s a small bandsaw box that I made freehand. No plans or drawings. I had a small chunk of spalted pecan from a tree and I let it do it’s thing in the saw. It has an integral wooden hinge that is cut into the wood. I still don’t know how I did it. Fools everyone who looks at it. God Bless us all. Keep dreaming. Happy Thanksgiving.

  2. Wow… Just… WOW! 😮
Truly amazing work, Dave! That’s a work of art!!!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

  3. This project sent me on a Rollercoaster of emotion. I had no idea where this was going and I loved it. From a random log, to “just another bandsaw box”, to an odd alien spaceship looking floor box, to a wall hanging box eaten by burl, to an amazing piece of art.
This blew me away dude and I love the finished piece. Keep up the great work.

  4. Adding the burl to the box, made the box go over the top; and that’s a good thing David. Kind of reminds me of old cypress clocks that I used to make. I used cypress cut from the bottom of the tree which gave it its design and they were real popular in Florida in the 80’s. I’m going to have to get your book. All these years in wood working and I’ve never made a bandsaw box.

  5. Great choices all around, it looks great! Adding the burl veneer at the end really elevated the design.

  6. This turned out amazing. When I listened to the podcast it was hard to picture what you were describing. I think this is an unmitigated success. My favorite art piece of yours I’ve seen yet.

  7. I thought not just another bandsaw box and then wow! definitely not just another bandsaw box. Well done, Sir.

  8. Omg that is absolutely jaw-dropping. Never ever lose your creativity, it is very inspiring to the rest of us !!!

  9. Dude… this is freaking awesome. I can’t imagine why anyone wouldn’t dig this. It was a surprising turn – really creative. The sort of thing I look at and think, “Wow. I would never think to do that.” Which is exactly the type of video it’s important to watch! Thanks, Dave. Cheers!

  10. Really not sure what to say about this post. I am simply amazed on how this all turned out. Just memorizing and beautiful at the same time.😊

  11. Love it! The progression of the project, being open to going in different directions to the final results. I think its looks awesome!! Great job!!
