Easy to Make Dust Collector for the DeWalt 735 Planer

It doesn't get much easier than this, especially when you see how well this works. The Dewalt 735 planer is a really common design and it has the benefit of having actually a blower built in to push the shavings out, so this is a solution that will only work with that particular planer.

  1. It doesn’t get much easier than this, especially when you see how well this works. The Dewalt 735 planer is a very common model and it has the advantage of having a blower built in to push the shavings out, so this is a solution that will only work with that particular planer.

    1. And for any other planer without a blower, you could easily sub the filter out for a fitting for your dust collector. I may just use that idea for my HF collector I’ve been meaning to put a separator on. Thanks John!

  2. Funny I just watched your older video this evening. Nice to get the update! I’m halfway through my dust collector cabinet build and checking in on what everyone else is doing

  3. Nice. I made a separator for my shop vac and am always surprised at how well it works. I made mine out of scrap and fabricated bits and pieces too which always makes doing something like this that much more satisfying. Thanks for sharing John, I look forward to your videos every week. Cheers {8^)

  4. So good to see you uploading material again John. This is rather timely as I am in the process of reassessing my dust collection. Do I really need a 3hp motor running for the planer. Not really as that blower is pretty powerful. Do I need a 3hp motor for the sander. No, pressure is too low so a shop vac is better. I need to make a thein separator and buy a new, small shop vac as my large one has died. Despite replacing the bearing it does not sound healthy. Time to build a separator I I have one on the 3hp dust collector)but like in your original plan, have a “proper” air filter to keep the fine dust out of the shop. The 3hp dust collector does a great job at the table saw, general clean up and will be used on the CNC.

    1. FYI, rocker’s dust right quick connect handle has an adjustable port under it that you can open up when using a sander so the flow and pressure is not restricted. might be able to DIY something to the same effect for sanding if you don’t want to spend the money on a new vac.

  5. So happy and relieved to see you back to regular content after what happened!! Very nice simple build and I like the sense of humour and editing , gets me smiling wide
    Cheers !

    1. @FWtravels go back a couple videos on the scrap bin Chanel – Google account hacked, Chanel hacked, Chanel taken down for a short time , Content history – at first – seemed also gone….but thankfully was not – Glad to have Happy John back – frantic and more paranoid than usual John was almost scary (fir us … must have been hell for him !!)

  6. I have the same planer and I’ll be adding one of these to my shop very soon. so much easier than cleaning up the mess on the floor and walls after planing 🙂

  7. The master is back and entertaining/educating once again. John, you had me laughing so hard at your holding the trash bin and catching the wood chips. There had to be a better way…ha ha. great video.

  8. When you’re ready for a real challenge, figure out what to do for the Mastercraft planer that a lot of people have. It can’t even get the chips out of its port, dust collector or not!

  9. I keep trying to figure the precise design to mount my wet vac directly to a larger can with a Thien baffle or cyclone. I think your design gets me there! The engine/lid can “just” be spaced off the top with a many-a-gon angle-cut plywood cylinder, then the hole through one side for the pipe. Awesome.

  10. Nice. I made my dust collector out of a old Valet ducted house vacuum cleaner and a 44 gallon drum with a removable lid. Works a treat.

  11. Glad to see you back John, I checked on your channels the other day and noticed you hadn’t posted and was worried. I’m glad to see everything has worked out. Be well my friend.

  12. Nice work John. I use an organic filter. I run my planner outside and let it all fall to the ground. Some blows away, some lands in the grass, then I sweep up the large part of it and toss it in the bin. LOL

  13. lol – I wanna see the video where you use a hole saw at an angle 🙂 Brilliant as always, John – simple and functional and accessible to mere mortals like us 😉
