I always enjoy the insight in your commentary videos (particularly a fan of the “Making a simple keepsake box” one from a few years ago). The overthinking of projects can get in the way of actually *doing* something. So it’s good to have a nudge like this to help steer one back on track in the planning stage.
For your mockups, were those clips from SketchUp still? Or are you doing that in something else? The visualization seems like a boon for spatial planning, but I’ve not looked into which tools would best suit me.
Happy creating!
Yes! I’m still using Sketchup 2017 lol. I still haven’t upgraded to the online version.
So the Harmony Garden Bench was too complicated?
😂 It’s “elevated”
We tend to overthink things. Simplicity is great for making woodworking an actual hobby rather than a challenge
I like haiku poems
But some of them don’t make sense
Refrigerator
that’s the idea. they don’t make sense for the mind.
This garden bench was the first project I ever built! Its still in use those it’s purpose has evolved. Its been used for the past 9 yrs as a media center and hold bluray player, game consoles and the loke! It was such a great project, thank you!
Awesome as always Steve.
I need to go back and rewatch your SketchUp tutorial… it’s been too long since I’ve used it, and the controls are not intuitive.
The man is back! Missed you ❤
Simplicity is a worthwhile goal. Humans tend to complicate things, especially as things evolve over time. And unfortunately I’ve noticed in some subjects that when you try to simplify it in one way you complicate it in another way.
Another example- I like the overall design of your bench but the horizontal part of the bench is fairly heavy but the legs visible at their narrow sides appear too light by comparison. Trying to address this would make the bench more complicated.
I built my version of the garden bench a few years ago at the request of my wife. I made it even simpler ala conventional picnic table design, but it is not as elegant as yours.
refreshing video as always

Miss your videos.
Measured cuts of pine
Guided by a steady hand
A seat for the yard
Thank you for the video. I enjoyed it alot. Miss your builds.
Agreed, simplicity in life is always a good thing! Great project! Thanks Steve! 👍👍🪚🪚
Simplicity requires a lot of thinking. 🤔
It’s nice to know that my thought process almost exactly mirrors one of the greats when considering my design ideas and the engineering in a piece. Thanks for guiding us through your design process, Steve. It’s really helpful and encouraging insight to those that might not know how to transition from using someone’s plans to making your own.
I love your use of color—and making accessible projects!!
what a great message. thank you for your hard work on making such great content.
Thanks Steve. I suffer from analysis paralysis. KISS. And get off YT. Me not you1! Keep doing you, I need it. Take care & stay safe.
