Minimal tools!
You can build this hose box utilizing just a miter saw and a drill. I created this to be put together with screws driven from the withins so none of them will show. It utilizes off-the-rack 1×3 and 1×2 boards readily available at any home center. Obviously, try to pick the straightest boards you can. The widths on these may vary somewhat, however this is developed in such a method that it will not matter. No ripping boards on a table saw required!

  1. Thanks for the video . I’m in need of an ottoman for my patio . Will do a little tweaking on size and having the storage will be useful .

  2. This came at the perfect time. I’m looking to do the same for my garden hose. Great video!

  3. Great idea not only for a garden hose but also patio cushions that I don’t want to leave out in the weather but close at hand. Now to figure out the water barrier I want to use. Thanks!!

  4. I think the height is perfect to use also as another extra seat in the area. Never harms to have another place to seat 😀

  5. Steve, this is perfect…I Have Limited Tools!
Wait, that’s a lot of work, I think I’ll stick
    to drawing instead.

  6. Very nice… love these simple builds…. i also have a small shop, iv been experimenting with hard woods now and again… i lv been looking into a planer, but i never see a planer in ur shop, think i last saw it in ur 2015-16 videos…. why did you get rid of it? Or its an unnecessary tool?… iv been busy searching “steve ramsey thickness planer” 😂nothing shows up… thats how i learnt how to woodwork, “steve ramsey- tablesaw” etc… my favorite youtube channel ❤️ ❤❤

  7. Brilliant idea, Steve! Really beautiful work!!! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

  8. Just last night I was thinking about how much I hate wrestling with the wind-up hose thing I got last summer as a first time home owner lol
I just made my first compost pile and learned a lot, so I think this will be my next project!
Thank you, btw, for making such simple and accessible projects and videos. The “if you don’t have this tool, you can do it like this” is incredibly helpful and motivating.

  9. Make it into a bench-size container and lay your hose inside in a figure-8 configuration instead of coiling it … eliminates all the twist. Learned this from watching long lengths of cable being staged inside ships under construction. When the “bull gang” gets around to fishing it through several compartments, it pays out evenly. I store 100-feet of extension cord between my garage doors in a figure-8 on two large hooks (one hook 2-feet above the other), and the cord never suffers from twisting.

    1. You can also coil a hose or cord with just one loop but every other loop you twist the thing the other direction so one coil has the hose twisted one way, the next coil has it twisted the other way so they all even out when you uncoil it. You can find plenty of videos on youtube that show how to do this.

  10. Love the color. And never mind the space, you’re gonna end up stuffing all sorts of junk in there anyway.

  11. I’m such a big fan of your videos and how you keep everything approachable for newer woodworkers or ones that aren’t willing/able to spend thousands.

Most woodworking YouTubers that I’ve seen have a checklist:
    – Sawstop
    – Woodpeckers
    – Festool Domino

But not you! You really embrace the “mere mortals” part and I love it. Thank you for sharing the craft in a way that makes newcomers rightfully think “I can do this.”

  12. The problem with size is the hose laying flat on the ground is wide but doesn’t stick up very high. You could make the box half as wide in one direction and let the coiled hose fit in the other direction, essentially dropping the coil into a slot. But as you have it is more versatile- you could uncoil only as much hose as you need at one time. You could put 2 hoses in there, you could put your sprinkler, hose nozzles, gloves, clippers in there on top of the hose.

  13. Hey Steve! I remember a couple years ago you made a video about buying lumber at the home center, what to look for and etiquette and stuff. I was wondering on your thoughts about buying lumber from a lumber yard or store and what mere mortals need to know about buying lumber there. Great video as always by the way!

  14. This is one of those things I rarely think about, but will make a huge difference. I also love the way you “challenged” yourself on this one. Makes a relatively simple and easy project just a little more creative and mindful.
