We chose the coffee table I made a little over a year ago wasn't quite huge enough. My concept to increase the size of the coffee table was to cut the coffee table in half lengthwise and include another piece to the width. Luckily, I had another piece of wood from the very same tree, so the piece that I included matched extremely well. I likewise reshaped this brand-new piece to match the curvy shape of the underside of the table. The other thing we wished to do was make a more intriguing top for the table. I thought about a number of various designs. One being 2 pieces of wood with a curved seam in between the 2. Another being a zipper pattern made with segmented pieces of wood. However what I ended up doing was an M.C. Escher influenced piece that transforms between fish and birds. It makes a very beautiful coffee table top. The leading simply sits on top of the table in a giant mortise which is a cutout on the underside of the new top. The top is made with maple and walnut to offer a strong contrast in between the light and dark wood.

Great work as usual, enjoy all your work!!!!!!!!!!!!
Immediately before watching this video, I had watched one about the complexity of Tesla Plaid electric motors. They are apparently engineering masterpieces. It seems to me that this table is not too far behind. Even allowing for the CNC machine, there are so many ways this could have gone ‘irretrievably’ wrong. In awe, as always Frank.
You are a rock star in my eyes for only waiting w week (from fear of screwing up). It takes me months & sometimes years to build up the courage to start a project when I’m afraid I’m going to mess it up. There’s several, but the biggest 2 were new roofing & mini split install. I did finish the new roof, took a month to finish after starting (5 yrs of procrastinating), but the mini split sits waiting, mocking me every time I pass the stuff.
Thereβs nothing wrong with the thickness of the top, itβs fine. Obviously the proportions were weird on the old table, but to me it looks like the right solution was always to make the top bigger, not necessarily thicker.
This looks amazing! So beautiful!
Great project and video, Frank. Thank you.
Hi Frank, thank you for sharing part of your honey-do list with us! Beautiful, precise and playful! β€π
I appreciate sharing that simple nugget of wisdom: “it’s only time”. I think I needed to hear that.
Well well well…look who it is….
Beautiful as always. Thank you
Love the concept! Iβm a huge fan of M C Escher. This is a great homage to him and his work.
Wow wow wow! Every time you show a video, you amaze me . Stunning piece of art.ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»
Great film. Gorgeous piece. Mahalo for sharing! : )
As always, another amazing build. Not just for the complexity of the piece, but the process to create it. And the thinking on the fly to correct mistakes so 99% of people would never know. I appreciate your vibe – you’re here to build, to grow your experience with new ideas and ways to creating them, and not concerned with engagement, subscribers, likes, or SEO.
Always refreshing to watch a video where the creator is as genuinely invested in the raw skill and creativity, as the audience. Bravo!
Another banger, Frank! Well done!
Yet another unique & fantastic build from Frank! πππππ¦ π¦
Wow! You are amazing! I’ve been a big Escher fan since the early 70’s. What a work of art!
I really enjoy your editing style, you make the video interesting without resorting to being dramatic or flashy
I appreciate that you always show your mistakes. I screw up so much that it’s comforting to see I’m not the only one!
I’m the weirdo of the group. I like seeing the bird to fish transition but of similar color woods rather than contrasting color woods.
Your videos are always a treat. Thanks.
