Personalizing and updating a 50 year old calculator with wood. For 10% off your first purchase, go to:
I'm gutting my grandparents' 52-year-old calculator and offering it brand-new life with a fresh style using walnut and hickory. The challenge with recasing old electronic devices in wood depends on reproducing the complex shapes that plastic can attain. This calculator holds a lot of memories for me, and I wish to honor its history by changing it into a sculpture, total with a stand that will make it an attractive focal point in any room.

Oh geez, we had those tapes, too! What a blast from the past. Excellent build as always!! I really like how everything came together even when hiccups occurred.
Calculator project and not one “80085” on screen. Shame.
😂 Your comment reminded me of the “calculator story” I learned in the 6th grade: Dolly Parton’s boobs weighed 69 pounds, they were 2 2 2 big. So she went to 51st Street to see doctor X and 8 hours later she was 55378008.
We thought we were so risqué showing it to each other! 😂
I learned one when I was young as well. It goes 1 girl, she is 16 and has 69 boyfriends. She does 3 of them. What is she? (11669×3). Flip the calculator upside down to see the answer. May not be an appropriate comment but the other comments reminded me of it and thought I’d share😂
😂
I just turned my phone upside down with the excitement of reading a naughty word…then my phone screen orientated itself, modern technologies are so boring!!! 😂
@@cappy9282 that’s a good one! And probably accurate! 🤣
YES!! the calculator video has finally dropped! I don’t know why I was looking forward to this so much, but I am not disappointed! Amazing work, and it’s really great to see you work on something so personal and special
Woodworkers love Dave Picciuto. And overkill, subtraction, deadlines, CNCs, walnut, re-making things… and Dave Picciuto.
I love you using all the tools available. Seeing the new cnc tech and 3d printer juxtaposed with the 50 year old calculator is exquisite.
Every time you showed that “vintage” iMac I was just picturing that dome as a segmented walnut turning.
Your evolved style of story telling and less teaching is great. What adds to the vibe is the way you’ve set up your shop to feel very artistic. Doing videos for you feels much more authentic.
Yoooo. The split screen ad placement, the voice over book excerpt narrative, all of this is incredible Dave. I’m loving the creative confidence you’re finding with these recent videos.
Thank you! I’ve been having so much fun with these videos recently. I’m totally reenergized.
I love it. And it feels so validating to know that many people struggle with deadlines, and get close to the finish line, and then Not wanting to finish. You inspire me and your work inspires me. Thank you Dave
❤️
You compared yourself to another artist and thought your work was lacking, we saw the comparison and think your work is absolutely on par!
You don’t give yourself anywhere near enough credit for the absolute beauty and technical skills you showcase in the things you craft! This calculator and stand is visually stunning, ergonomically balanced, and evokes a sense of playfulness and joy from something that is traditionally functional and utilitarian. If that’s not art, then I don’t know what is! ❤
Oh man, thank you! ❤️
I know you’ve been struggling with this one for a long time, but I think what you ended up with is visually interesting and unique. The space age designs of the 60’s and 70’s are just iconic, and I think your wooden reincarnations bring that back down to Earth. And we are always our own worst critics, perhaps artists are especially guilty of this. As my wife likes to say: done is better than perfect. Or as I’ve seen elsewhere: it’s not just good, it’s good enough. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing this incredible quote from Rubin. Your work is remarquable but the way you present stuff has a great impact. Pushing self boundaries is no easy task. I feel better each time I watch your videos.
Thank you!!
This project is way more impressive than what your expectations are allowing you to accept. Love the work, everything is an experiment. Stay Awesome.
This is so much more than a woodworking channel; enjoyed the older content too but really enjoying this style.
Thank you!
I thought the audio book portion was from When there’s a Will There’s an A and I was like whoa what an insightful learning program!
That Rick Rubin quote shook me. You bring him up a lot but g’dam i can see why. This and the “add the knots” podcast episode it’s like I’m not alone in my artistic struggles. Keep it up David, I’ll come back for every video!
❤️
That section from the book hits… going to go read that book now. Thanks for making the emotions and troubles we feel as makers part of the video.
This was truly a joy to watch. I wasn’t sure about the new video style at first, but I love the voice over and storytelling. Your skills as an artist and the ideas you’ve been bringing to life are really inspiring and awesome! When I saw the finished project I genuinely chuckled and smiled with joy because this is just so cool. Everything about it. Thanks, David! I’m excited to see what’s coming up next!
Loved seeing the pile of test pieces. Shows what goes into project behind the shots.
Never seen a 3d printer that can print multiple colors like that, that’s really cool
