In this woodturning video I turn a natural edge bowl from a Birch log. This log was from a dead fall Birch tree. You can see the start of the rot around the pith, the lower parts of the trunk were hollow. I salvaged some for fire wood and kept a couple of pieces to turn. I thought I would risk turning this unusual shaped piece although it wasn't dry. I turned the outside and left it in plastic bag over night then turned the within so the walls were quite thin (around 10mm) to allow the piece to dry quicker. A number of days later on it had actually dried quite a bit so I sanded and finished it with Danish oil. I'm anticipating a little bit of motion as it dries totally but hoping since of the density of the walls, not to much cracking will occur.

It always amazes me how much “life” adding the oil does to the wood. These “simple” and natural shapes make stunning items.
