Thanks Andy for correctly describing that material as a healed (technically callused) over knot, and not as a burl – which is what so many youtube turners would call it. These are one of my favorite sources of interesting turnings- I particularly like making small bowls from these calluses. Oak is a favorite source. Also apple, from properly pruned large-tree orchards – but any wood where the calluses tend to cover faster than the branch stub deteriorates completely is a possible source.
