Today we're going to make an entire lot of box cutters and a couple of knives.
And I'm going to show you how to do this with just a few fundamental tools. Thanks to Send Cut Send for sponsoring this video. Check out their metal cutting services at:

Looks great! A technique you might want to try in the future is tempering with a torch. It’s fun. You basically heat treat the same way and sand it clean. Then you move the torch along the spine of the blade until there is a gold color along the edge (blue is too soft). Quite fun
Thank you! That would be a great tip to show in a future video
Fun fact! Send cut send sells AEBL stainless, it’s a great knife steel. Commonly used in knives that need to stay super sharp like razors and scalpels.
@Alexander Huff but it wont hold an edge! : )
@Ben Nawrath I have a shipment of prototypes coming from them right now.
@Washoe Creative nice! It’s a great business model if you have equipment you need to help pay for lol. I’m definitely going to check them out if I need stuff for home.
Wait….what was he making?
@Sendcutsend Checking out your website know and may reach out with some questions.
Many of my Amazon packages come in plastic bags and I have no idea how to open them so they just sit in the corner waiting. Please make a bag opener too! Boxes I can handle, I just use my teeth. 😉
(Love ya, Dave. My favorite maker!)
Haha!
We’re not JUST making box cutters. We’re also JUST having fun.
YES!
CAN WE JUST HAVE SOME FUN??
We love seeing the GRR-Rip Block being used for the resawing!
Clever design on how the heel flips out on the back to help push!
@Make Something Thanks, we’re pretty proud of it!
I’ve been using a repurposed stainless cheese knife as a marking knife for YEARS. It’s plenty hard and sharp.
That being said, these are great box cutters. 🙃
Wait, I missed it, what are we making today!? 🤣 thanks David! Love what you do!
I frequently open packages with a bito pen lid, so literally any kind of metal is an improvement for me. Lovely work as always!
Awesome video, all the designs look really nice!
Awesome designs. I think it’s awesome that they’re all so different. I’ve been excited for this video since you started talking about it in the podcast a few weeks ago. Well worth the wait! I’d love to know what your design process was like. Were you just inspired? Did you give yourself a design constraint and iterate? Either way, awesome!
THANK YOU!! I have pallets of beautiful figured wood. Your video is inspiring. Cheers!
I really really REALLY love this project. This would make a hugely awesome addition to a charcuterie board.
I’m not a knife maker, nor do I play one on TV. But with this video, I think I can become a box cutter maker. Thank you for instructions…and the tiny bit of snarkiness. I love it!
Been listening to you talk about this for weeks and NOT ONE of those knives is ANYTHING like imagined! Nice work, and very cool to share the files so people can make their own spin on it, and thanks to SendCutSend for sponsoring!
Thank you Jeremy!
Those are actually box cutters.
As a professional knife maker, I see nothing wrong with your process. Everything we do follows the same idea, shape the knife, heat treat it and stick a handle on it, only we do thousands a day. I currently work in the CNC handle department, but I have worked in almost every other area of the factory. The only real difference is everything we do is dimensioned and shaped to make thousands of identical models. Knife making at its core is pretty basic and I love it!
BTW, are those box cutters? 😉
Preemptive trolling is on point here. This was fun! Great demonstration of how you don’t have to follow “rules” for everything. Sometimes the making of the thing is the fun part. And being creative and different is better than being the same as everybody else. Thanks for sharing!
Those look really clean lines and very nice designs. Hopefully you get great use out of them for many years to come David. Can’t wait to see more videos soon David. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Forge On. Fab On. Weld On. Make Something. Keep making. God bless.
Great job! You sharing the knife files is great especially since that makes this project accessible to just about anyone. Your “box cutters” are a great intro into knife making. I can see you maybe doing a followup video showing marking knives. Always enjoy your videos!
These look great, but what are you going to use them for?
Think he’s going to use them to chop ingredients for salads 😉
Awesome project David! Love the different design possibilities very distinct from the typical boring knife designs.
