Woodworker turns thrift store table into modern fine furniture.

Turning a thrift store table into invaluable great furniture. For 10% off your first purchase, go to:

I went hunting for the ugliest, most inexpensive table I might discover and turned it into something entirely unexpected. What began as thrift shop scrap ended up being a lovely piece of fine furniture as I pushed myself with hand tools, woodworking methods, and my very first Kumiko pattern made from hundreds of tiny pieces. Along the method I share my style procedure, the tools I utilize, the difficulties I faced, and how imagination can transform even the worst table into something worth keeping permanently.

  1. David, you would never know this was your first kumiko project unless you told us it was like you did. This turned out beautifully. You are right by saying having the proper jigs help make the job easier. Beautiful work

  2. ‘remixing old furniture’, what a neat idea. I’ve dumpster dived for some and refinished them with spectacular results, but this idea has added a new dimension to my thoughts. thanks.

  3. Loving the Kumiko. I’ve bought from JT Woodworks, good quality stuff! (edited because I’d put Woodworking)

  4. I was stuck in the same rut when you asked about ideas for this. When you said cupboard, ok sounds good but then…. The outcome has blown me away! The icing on the cake- those orange shelves! Stunning work, and you’ve inspired me to begin my own daunting procrastination projects too…. Great stuff! Thank you for being a constant inspiration .

  5. You’ve Pavlov’ed me. @15:00 I started humming/singing “stand in the place….” 😅

  6. this turned out absolutely bonkers. amazing! It probably has something to do with The Dude watching over you on the TV in the background. My only suggestion is to put the Jackie Treehorn doodle on the back or bottom of it, just inscribed not colored in. an ester egg for some lucky winner. Kumiko turned out amazing. great work as usual!

  7. David this may be my favorite project youve done. Youre also a way better maker than I am but Id like to give a tid bit of a tip that I saw. I know you dont use the router a lot. When you used the palm router to route your dados you ran the straight side against your spacer/jig. When doing this if you were to ever so slightly twist the router the corner will pivot and the distance from the center of the bit to the fence will change. It seems counter intuitive but if you ride the rounded side the distance from the bit to the jig will never change with any small deviations to your form. Thanks for the great video man! Do more Kumiko!

  8. Everyone: “To get started with Kumiko, you should probably use something soft and forgiving like bass wood. You really shouldn’t jump in with harder woods like walnut.” David: “Hold my beer…” 😆🤣 Love it – you knocked it out of the park!

  9. that is very well done Dave , you did a fantastic job , you might be on to something lol , keep up the good work and the awesome attitude

  10. The transition from looking at the piece in the thrift shop to the wood shop was super clean.

  11. You knocked it out of the park!! Using walnut for your first kumiko project is not easy but you absolutely crushed it with this beautiful build. Glad to hear you enjoyed using the sled and jigs. I’m hoping to make it to Making It 500 and see it in person!
