I'm making a customized built-in cabinet to hold my music equipment. Rather of concentrating on the develop we take a much deeper look into what enters into the planning, sketching and problem fixing. Writing down my restrictions, requirements and preparing the build on paper. Including finding out the number of sheets of plywood I require for this woodworking task.

The concrete block was a great tip! I usually am trying to put so much pressure down at that point that I can lose track of keeping other aspects in check. Loved this video and taking more time with your design approach. At some point you get tired of seeing other people build things unless they are doing something super clever (like the concrete block) but there is still so much to learn from the entire process. Thank you for keeping it fresh.
Thanks Phillip!
Was really fun to see the music being made behind the scenes! If I was to design this one I would have had a couple of rack spaces (maybe 3) up at the top, add the conditioner and a third space in between for a rack mount cable manager, would clean things up immensely. Nice gear and setup though. Love the old Sansui reverb and the space echo clone.
Thanks Mark! Yep, I totally agree about more rack space up top. Especially since I have a rack mount preamp. Unfortunately I ran out of room due to the built-in bookshelf up top. And that old Sansui reverb unit belonged to my dad! It sounds like crap and I love it!
@Make Something It sounds like “special” crap. Reverbs can be very interesting things, they don’t have to sound pretty or amazing, they have a job to do and if it helps add a bit of grit/noise/fuzz/ambience, then it’s all good! As long as it’s not toooooo noisy 😉
Gotta say, this is my favorite video of yours yet. I really enjoy the design process and it’s not something that gets covered enough. Also, really cool seeing exactly what instruments are doing what!
This video was super fun for me to make! Thanks Daniel!
Wait, I shouldn’t just wing it every time???
Thanks for the great videos. I’ve learned a lot from you since the guys at KenCraft sent me here 4 years ago.
That little music video interlude was great! I really enjoyed the progression through the process on this one from design to woodworking to music. Very cool!
Making something that suits only yourself is one of the best parts about being a woodworker.
Beautiful work, Dave! Really well done! 😃
Organization is always a good idea!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
It was great watching your thought process from need to design to creation. It was also cool to see you playing your music. All in all, another great video!
“It’s 2022. We made it!” I felt that. Great overview of how the planning process works. Sometimes we can just wing it, and sometimes it helps to write things down in general terms and get more detailed as you think things through. My first thought about housing electronics in a cabinet is airflow. I’m sure you know what your gear needs, but if others are taking notes, make sure you take that into consideration before you seal it up in an airtight box. All part of the planning. Electronic music eludes me. It looks like it could be fun but seems like there’s a bit of a learning curve and lots of gear to acquire. I’m working on how to apply effects to my sax and mixing that with the natural live sound. Haven’t got anything I’m happy with yet. Was fun to see you playing on this one. Thanks for sharing!
Great idea for a video but I feel like you only scratched the surface of where this idea could take you. Consider something like a coffee table or a cabinet-style sofa table. From those outer dimension limits you have to work your way in for things like top-surface overhangs, feet, reveals, etc.
awesome video dave! love the thought process and execution! cool project. i have a buddy who i should be making something similar to this for. love the channel! keep up the solid work dude !
Excellent project video, I love these types of projects. You know the ones that directly affect your life then makes you mad that you didn’t do it earlier.
Yes! Thank you!
This is now one of my favorite videos you’ve done. Love the pre-work design insights and after the build feedback.
I love rack mounts and your laser cut labels look so good!
This is one of my favorite videos of yours. Not many times do we get to see the reasoning for designs.
“I don’t care what it looks like, it’s just a prototype.” Still looks better than 90% of my projects. Awesome little setup and now we know how all of those fun quirky music montages make it into your videos.
The open back is going to be a good idea, easier to change things around and helps dissipate the heat.
For the splines, make yourself a little cradle for your palm router. I’m actually shocked that you didn’t.
This was outstanding! Love seeing your detailed design thought process! A second channel vid with a breakdown of each of the effects and how you like to mix them would also be awesome if you have the time/inclination.
I love it David. You sparked my brain to build a media cabinet for the television and related components. Thanks for all the great ideas you present on your channel.
Peace brother,
Steve
Is this the first we’re seeing you play the music that is in the video along with the woodwork?
I love it and it just works so well with your videos keep Doing that 💙💙💙
