This video shows how I made the wood band saw I developed. It's a 12" model, which means the wheels are 12" in size. The max resaw capability is 7-1/4". It utilizes an 80" blade. The motor I utilized is a 1 hp induction motor that runs at 1725 rpm. The pulley ratio is 2:1 with the lower wheel running at half the motor speed.
The unique feature is the fast release tensioner. With a basic flip of a lever it launches the stress on the blade.

I Had a Dream about a Wooden Band Saw… then built it

This video shows how I made the wooden band saw I designed. It’s a 12″ model, and that means the wheels are 12″ in diameter. The max resaw capacity is 7-1/4″. It uses an 80″ blade. The motor I used is a 1 hp induction motor that runs at 1725 rpm. The pulley ratio is 2:1 with the lower wheel running at half the motor speed.
The unique feature is the quick release tensioner. With a simple flip of a lever it releases the tension on the blade.
Twice motor speed. Are you sure it’s not 50% of motor speed? Other wise that blade is motoring along at 5400 ft/min
@mpetersen6 Thanks 🙂
John, it’s truly such a pleasure to see your mind at work. Thank you for this video and all the many videos you’ve produced over the years. You’re creativity and skill are very inspiring. Well done my friend.
Great build John. Your ingenuity has inspired me to build as many of my own tools as I can. So far I have built my own table saw as well as several jigs and clamping fixtures. Keep up the great work!
So many signature John Heisz moves here– this is like an I Build It Essentials video that shows a whole lot of little bits of a lot of what you do. It would be really awesome to see a full, long-form three-part series of how you make these videos: I – Conception, II – Filming & Building, III- Editing. This video is a perfect model for what videos on YouTube could be. I’m not sure if people realize the full scope of what goes into all of this. So cool, and thanks for all that goes into this
Yeah I always appreciate his nail gun sounds he trims to the same spacing.
I used to work for DoAll industrial saws and I have to say you done a hellava job. I rebuilt quite a few machines but I don’t believe I would have considered taking on the project. Good job!
Man what a gorgeous saw. I usually don’t love the all wood look on most things, but with the logo burnt on it, it looks so good.
Really fantastic work, John! Beautiful bandsaw! 😃
Do you think it would be easy to build it for 12″ resaw capability?
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
That is an amazing build. Love that bandsaw.
Phenomenal work, as usual. That logo looks so good on there. It is just the right size.
John will you be releasing plans for this band saw?
I took a look and I don’t see them forsale.
Absolutely outstanding build, I watch pretty much all of your videos, however I generally don’t comment, I don’t know why lol
Anyhoo, Great video!
Great filming/editing and the commentary is fantastic John! I really enjoy the build and the process to learn from the end product and how you adjust/adapt it to make it better. Very rewarding/entertaining/educative stuff. Will get a set of plans to ensure more content like this! Cheers from Spain
I don’t think I would ever have the patience to build one myself, but it sure is fun to watch!
Holy crap!!! This was an incredibly detailed build John. I bet almost no one has a handle on the amount of time you took to make this project come to life. Just awesome!
Great build John. Seems to have plenty of power ,accuracy. and it looks great too. Master craftsmanship as always👍👍
Thanks, much appreciated!
I’m always amazed at the quality and accuracy you are able to achieve. it makes the simple materials you often use look great. thanks for the awesome video!
Absolutely beautiful, John. It’s not just a band saw, it’s a functional work of art.
Awesome! I’ve been waiting for this video. I watched the other segments, but this full build video is great! Another great design/build in the can, so to speak.
I know you said earlier that there won’t be plans for sale in this one, but I wish there were.
I watch a lot of diy shop machine builds and I pick up a lot of different design variations/details that I make notes of. A band saw build is in my very near future.
When you were re-sawing the board here I had a thought. I’ve seen various resaw jigs/attachments/fences/etc. I wonder if a guy could make an adjustable thickness guide for the miter slot, and another that would mount on the upper blade guide assembly. The two would correspond with one another to guide the board being re-sawn. The reason for the two separate guides would be for better, more accurate means of keeping the guided side of the board at a rock-solid space from the blade. Maybe this is a stupid idea, but an idea nonetheless! Ha…
Anyway… I watch all of your videos and love the work you do. Thanks for it.
Many thanks for the effort it took in every phase of this project And there is a ton of work here.. Many thanks for the effort it takes to make the video allowing you to share the project with us. Hope to see it in action in future videos. A man who knows what he’s doing, makes it look EZ. A++
This is incredible John. You are by far my favorite wood fella. Always great videos and content.
I’m sure I will never build one, but I watched and enjoyed every minute! Nice work John! Thanks for making the video.
I’ve been watching your videos for a while now and this build shows a lot of your different tricks and techniques that to me are like a staple of your work, i really appriciate all the engineering and details that you put in both your projects and your videos, keep up the great work
